Low Density Foam
Foam makes for good cushioning in furniture seating applications, because its tightly packed network of cells or air bubbles, allows air to pass through it when a load is applied to it. When the load is removed, the foam returns to its original dimensions. Low density foam works in the same way as high density foam, but it isn’t as durable because it is not as strong as high density foam. It doesn’t last as long as high density foam and it achieves compression set a lot faster. When foam achieves compression set, it flattens out and doesn’t return to its original dimensions when a load is removed from it. However, low density foam is less expensive than most high density foams that are on the market.
Down Feathers
Down feathers provide a very comfortable surface, lending itself to use in pillows. However, down isn’t anywhere near as firm as high density foam and it doesn’t last as long. If furniture that is stuffed with down feathers gets a tear, then it could result in feathers going everywhere, producing one heck of a mess. While down cushioning is usually less expensive than high density foam cushioning, the cost savings probably isn’t worth it.
